A Difficult Game About Climbing
The Ramp is a minimalist skateboarding game that focuses on the essence of vert skating—riding ramps, pulling off tricks, and maintaining momentum. Unlike mainstream titles like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or Skate, The Ramp avoids complex objectives and narrative fluff. Instead, it offers four distinct stages—a half-pipe, an empty pool, a double bowl, and a mega ramp—where players can skate freely, experimenting with tricks and flow.
Mastering The Ramp requires finesse and practice. Here are some tips to help you find your flow:
Time Your Pumps: Press and hold the A button to crouch as you descend a ramp, then release at the lip to gain speed. Timing is critical to launch higher and perform bigger tricks.
Adjust for Isometric Perspective: The game’s ¾ view can make navigation tricky. Pay attention to your skater’s body orientation, as the left stick’s direction depends on their facing angle, not the screen. Practice steering to avoid veering off ramps.
Experiment with Tricks: Use the right stick to spin and grab your board in mid-air. Combine spins with grabs (like nosegrabs) to create stylish combos, even without a scoring system. Try pulling off a 1080 for personal satisfaction.
Master Grinds: Use the right trigger to grind lips and edges, but don’t hold too long, as it slows momentum. Chain grinds with jumps to maintain flow, especially in the half-pipe or bowl.
Try Hardcore Mode: Once comfortable, enable hardcore mode for a true test of skill. Without landing assistance, you’ll need precise timing to stick every trick.
The Ramp is a love letter to skateboarding, distilled into a minimalist masterpiece. Its simple controls, vibrant stages, and focus on flow make it a refreshing addition to the genre. Whether you’re landing a 900 in the half-pipe or grinding the pool’s edge, The Ramp offers endless opportunities for creativity and mastery.
